Finish of pumping

Most of the buildings flooded in Christchurch on Tuesdaj' evening should have been pumped out by today. The fire brigade has so far pumped nearly 500,000 gallons of water from more than 40 premises, and only two or three more requests are expected today. Firemen pumped about 10,000 gallons from St Bede’s College yesterday. Xaviei College, Hillmorton Kindergarten, and several small i businesses were also helped. Some of the worst-affected nroperties were near Moorhouse Avenue, where about 44.000 gallons were removed from the Christchurch Technical Institute and the Grosvenor Hotel, among other places. About 40,000 gallons ; flooded Sunnyside Hospital on Tuesday, cutting most of, the heating system and filling: the boilers with water. Firemen spent 16 hours at the hosnital. Mr B. F. Hyland, the deputy chief fire officer, said yesterdav that two of the requests for pumping came from a businessman whose deep-freeze was flooded and 1 from a woman who asked if! her back garden could be, drained.
