Thai units on alert

BANGKOK, March 31
Five military and police units stationed in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces have been put on stand-by alert.
“This is not a full military alert, but a preparation for any emergency situation,” a military spokesman said. Thailand’s present political and economic instability is seen by some observers as the reason behind the standby order. The Prime Minister (Mr Thammasak), who formed a government after student-led demonstrations had toppled Field Marshal Thanom’s military regime, has said that he may resign if he can find no solution to the country's present economic problems.
