Games profit may be $500,000

An overfall profit of at least $500,000 was expected to 'be made from the Commonwealth Games, the chairman of the Organising Committee (Mr R. S. Scott) said yesterday. .

He said it would be another two months before the exact financial position was known, but it was certain that there would be a “very healthy" profit. The reason for this, he said, was that all committees of the Games organisation had kept within their budgets; and income, particularly from ticket sales, was much higher than had been expected. Mr Scott said the organising committee was •at present considering what it would do with the surplus. Those who were likely to share in it. were organisations and people who had made financial sacrifices.

This almost certainly includes the Christchurch City Council, which took no rental for the use of Queen Elizabeth II Park. Officials who contributed towards the costs of their uniforms will probably be reimbursed.

The rules of the Commonwealth Games Federation state that any final profit from a Games meeting should go to the national Commonwealth Games' Association of the host country.

It is thought likely that after all grants and additional payments have been made, about $lOO,OOO will remain to be forwarded to the New Zealand Olympic and British Commonwealth Games Association in Wellington.
