A Goldie for $6500
An anonymous buyer paid $6500 for a small Charles Goldie oil painting at an auction in Hamilton last week.
The lOin x Bin portrait, “The Widow”, had not been offered for public sale before. It interested only two of
I the 350 bidders at the sale.! Bidding began at $4OOO and (rose by $5OO bids. [ “The Widow” is a portrait! |of a Maori woman wearing! a flax cloak. Her chin and| lower lip are tattooed. She! has two huia feathers in herj hair, and wears a greenstone hei tiki and ear pendant. The painting is signed and! dated 1915, and is in its) original frame. The same auctioneers, George Walker. Ltd, sold a Goldie for r. New Zealand record price of $B5OO in an auction in Hamilton in December. Two Goldie pencil drawings. signed and dated 1936 and 1937, together fetched $7OO.
A Francis Hodgkins water-colour, “A Street Scene in Southern France”, sold for $9OO after slightly more spirited bidding. A J. M. Wright water-col-our, "Te Amapo Porata”, sold for $B5O and a Blomfield oil of Mt Rua-! pehu, dated 1889, for $650.
