Auckland talks on Islanders
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 25. A senior officer of the Labour Department’s immigration division will visit Auckland tomorrow to look into the question of Islanders who remain in New Zealand after the expiry of their permits.

discuSs the over-all question with C.A.R.E. “I am not prepared to issue any instruction that could be interpreted as condoning the law to be broken,” Mr Colman’s telegram said. Mr De Bres had asked the Minister to instruct his department to apply for bail for 15 Tongans “held in custody pending deportation.” “As previously advised I have taken action to ensure That there is no repeat of the activities that could be described as ‘dawn raids’,” the Minister said, “I do not feel an amnesty is the correct course of ‘ action at this stage as unless such an amnesty is available to all persons illegally resident in New Zealand it would not be proper. . “I share your concern regarding exploitation and have taken steps to inquire further into this situation.”
