Sumner off until May
The Christchurch United player, S. Sumner, will not play soccer again before the middle of May. He was suspended seven playing days when he appeared before the Canterbury Football Association’s judiciary committee last evening. Sumner was sent off in United’s match against New Brighton at Rangers Park on Saturday for “violent conduct” after an incident with the Brighton player, J. Souter. After the match Souter had six stitches inserted in a cut inside his mouth.
The Brighton cent[e-half, T. Blake, who was sent off in the same match for “persistent misconduct," was suspended for two playing Saturdays; Each player has served one match of his sentence—the second game between Brighton and Christchurch United on Sunday. Blake will miss Brighton’s regional' final of the Air New Zealand tournament against Caversham at Dunedin next Saturdav; Sumner will miss United’s first six matches in the Rothmans National League.
Tennis.—Austria has a 2-1 lead over Switzerland in their first round Davis Cup tennis tie in Zurich. H. Kary and P. Pokorny beat the home pair, P. Kanderal and M. Burgener, 7-5, 6-4, 64.
