Holmlea's master leaving sea

The master of the inter-island roll-on vessel Holmlea, Captain D XV L. Henigan. of Bluff, has resigned his position and has been appointed to a tugmaster’s' Position with the Wellington Harbour Board. Captain Henigan aged 36, was born in Nelt>on and educated at Nelsen Col-: lege. He has spent 20 years at bea, six yeais in command, and four of those commanding the Holmlea, on roster dutv with other shipmasters. Captain Henigan will make his last voyage in command of the Holmlea when he arrives in Lyttelton tomorrow. He said yes- : terday that there was a haze of! uncertainty about the future of billets for certificated coastall men in New Zealand. His post- i tion with the Wellington Har-| bour Board offered security, he said. Captain Henigan said that he ■ was sorry to leave the Holmlea, which he called an excellent ■ vessel. Yesterday at Lyttelton,, strong rumours persisted that' the Holmlea was definitely ending service in June Experi-I enced shipping officials at Lyttelton say that if the Rangatira is' withdrawn, the Holmlea alone,; reinforced by flexible coastalintercolonial roll-on services, could handle all the WellingtonLyttelton cargo. Sometimes the Holmlea has good cargoes, but sometimes she has a vast amount of empty space which Christchurch merchants cannot fill, they say. In repl.'’ to N.M.T.. of Christchurch, the Press Association message from Canberra regarding a feasibility study by New Zealand and Australia over the mutual operation of the Tasman “liner” trade can easily be clarified. The word “liner” in this sense does not mean “passenger liner” trade. A “liner” trade is a regular trade or service, i.e. “cargo liners” in the New Zea-land-European service. The message only indicates that agreement may have been reached between both governments to share the cargo trade on regular Tasman services. But although many people would like to see a regular Tasman passenger service, the prospect seems unlikely. The Straat Chatham (Dutch), engaged in the Asian service, and the Badenstein (German), engaged in the European service (both berthed at Cashin Quay at the moment), have limited passenger accommodation but neither are sufficiently patronised to make it economically worth-while.
