Pulverised rubbish

Bexley tip might soon he a thing of the past. The Christchurch City Council will obtain specifications for pulverising equipment to take the city’s rubbish, and the Mayor (Mr N. G. Pickering) will sound out the possibility of a joint metropolitan venture when he meets his counterparts of adjoining local bodies on April 1. The council’s special st£-

committee on rubbish disposal yesterday authorised the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) to advertise for specifications and costs of suitable equipment. Cr M. Batchelor, chairman of the sub-committee, said that pulverising seemed the best method of rubbish disposal for a city the size of Christchurch. Other methods, including incineration and composting, had been considered but did not have as many advantages.

Pulverising ensured that refuse was ground into small pieces which could

still be used for land fill, but eradicated problems of Wind-blown litter, rodents and flies. The sub-committee was still prepared to hear submissions from interested parties on rubbish disposal, she said.

(Mr Pickering has frequently advocated the pulverising of rubbish as a method of disposal, and has expressed a wish to have it done on a metropolitan scale. He said yesterday, however, that if other local bodies were not agreeable the city council should still consider “going it alone” iwith a pulveriser.)
