Cactus in bloom
A garcen in Nonnanbyi Street, Rakaia, is attracting] interest. A large Century’ Mexican cactus plant on the property of Mr and Mrs R. Grigg, has reached the flowering stage, something it dots only once in a lifetime. The plant is 30 years old. The flowers are growing on a central stem about 25ft high, and are beginning to show colour —large clusters] of waxy yellowish green. There are about 40 arms of flowers. Mrs Grigg was given the plant by a neighbour 24 i years ago, and she hopes to cultivate further plants from the off-shoots. The plant will die after the flowering, expected to last a month. Flower buds began formling «n the plant in January.
