National women’s softball
Christchurch West has drawn two former champions in early games ; at the national Dustin Cup : inter-club women’s softball tournament in Masterton tomorrow. West, which won the Canterbury competition Saturday, plays Royal (Counties) in the first game in the morning In the afternoon West meets a previous winner. Leopards (Hawke's Bay) and then on Wednesday morning has been drawn against Broadway (Wellington), a winner several times. West’s fourth game against Saints (Hutt Valley) will be played after the Broadway match, and the Christchurch team will complete its programme with games against Melville (Waikato) on Friday and AkaIrana (Auckland) on Saturday. West’s coach (Mrs J. Phillips) said the games against Leopards, Broadway, and Akarana, would be vital. “But I'm sure the team is capable of winning,’’ she said. The three northern teams have three New Zealand representatives as pitchers—L. Bowles (Leopards), 1. Keating (Broadway), and C. Kemp (Akarana) the present national pitcher.
West can match these teams with another national representative, R. Storer, and a New Zealand trialist this year, S. Constable.
West is in the A section for the second successive year, having finished fifth last year. The team, which leaves Christchurch today is: Mrs Constable (captain), Mrs Storer. C. Quested, M. Lee, L. Watts, K. Porter, B. Johns, twins Pam and Vai Chambers, A. Key, S. Cox, and P. Cameron.
