‘Chilly-bin’ system for Rugby league

The “sin-bin” — or. as it 'Yas described at last evenin” s board of control meeting, “chilly-bin — method of tcmpoiaiv orderings off will be introduced to the 17-years and -yeais Canterbury Rugby league grades in the coming season.

Opinion among board members was evenly divided on the merits of the new system, and the casting vote of the chairman (Mr M. R. Clinton)' was required to break a 5-5 voting deadlock. Among those against the change were the conveners of the grades concerned. Messrs D. J. Alsop and I. A. Jenkins.

Mr Clinton said that “four or five leagues” used the “chilly bin” dismissals—whereby a player is suspended behind the dead-ball area for a period and then recalled by the referee—in open football, and that it might be introduced to Auckland premier fixtures this year.

However, Mr Alsop said that it was an endorsement of rough play. Agreeing with him, Mr Jenkins warned that “on certain grounds” in Christchurch young players undergoing temporary suspensions could be influenced bv equally youthful spectators. He also contended that stricter refereeing had curbed past outbreaks of offences in the intermediate grades. While making a point that

the “chilly bin” would not! supercede the present order-, ings off, Mr Clinton said that i the New Zealand Rugby; League intended supporting the system at the inter-j national board meeting in! Sydney in July. Mr Alsop moved a motion that the “chillv bin” not be used in any of tlie board’s grades this season; an amendment by Mr D. Kerr that it be used in all i grades for a trial period of two l months was -not accepted by Mr , Clinton, who then added another i amendment that it apply 'to the 117-years and 19-years divisions I only.
