Floating down the river . . .
A fisherman on the Waimakariri River might take his biggest catch yet in the next few days — a 90 c.c. farm motor-cycle. How a 1973 Suzuki managed to be floating down the river is a question which has been much on the mind of Mr Keith Bunn, a farmer of View Hill, near Oxford, in the last few days.
On Thursday Mr Bunn was checking for stock on the islands in the riverbed between Woodstock and the gorge bridge. He crossed a tributary
on his almost-new machine as it was getting dark. When he returned he found that the river had risen.
While he was attempting to re-cross the tributary the motor-cycle was washed away from underneath him.
As it has balloon tyres, the machine should float, either on or just below the surface.
Any fisherman who hooks a 1501 b catch in the near future need not fear that he will be disbelieved if he tells the police.
