Petrosian in semi-finals
(N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright* PALMA DE MALLORCA. T. Petrosian (Russia) scored his third and decisive victory over L. Portisch (Hungary) in their thirteenth game of the quarter-final for the world chess championship.
Three victories were required to clinch the match and advance into the semifinals.
The two grand masters had won twice, Petrosian the fifth and ninth games, and Portisch the tenth and twelfth. All other games ended in draws.
Petrosian, the world champion in 1963 and 1966, will play a semi-final against his fellow-countryman, V. Korchnoi, who beat H. Mecking (Brazil). i The other semi-finalists are also Russians —B. Spassky, and A. Karpov. The semi-finals, in April, I will decide a challenger for (the world champion, R. J. (Fischer (United States) next I year.
