AN INDOOR RECORD New time for mile

T. Waldrop, of the Univer: sity of North Carolina, has set a world indoor record for the mile, with a time of 3min 55.0 sec at the San Diego ihdoor games. The slightly-built Waldrop took'the lead after the first half-mile and was unofficially timed at 55.8 secs for his final quarter in breaking the previous record of 3:56.4 held jointly by T. O’Hara and J. Ryun, both of the United States.

S. Prefontaine (Oregon) won the two miles in an American national record time of Bmin 22.4 secs, 2secs ahead of R. Tayler (New Zealand).

Miss M. Decker, of Sacrflmento, cut almost ssecs off the women’s 880-yard indoor record of 2:07.3 when she finished almost 100 yard? ahead of her nearest competitor in 2:02.4.

Miss R. Boyle (Australia)), won the women’s 60 yards in 6.7 secs; G. Woods remained unbeaten on the indoor cir~ cuit this year with a shot put of 69ft 7in, and H. Baumgartner (West Germany) won the long jump with 25ft lljin.
