Perfect record for young swimmer
The nine-year-old North Beach swimmer, Grant Forbes, has a perfect record at this year’s Canterbury swimming championships. He has won the four events he has contested so far and has broken the provincial record in each one.
At the first session of the championships on Saturday, Forbes broke two records, and at the second session last evening at the Queen Elizabeth II Park pool he broke two more records—the nine-year-old boys’ 100 m freestyle and 50m butterfly.
His best swim was in the butterfly, in which he reduced the old time, held by R. Cocks, by 2.lsec, with a new mark of 41.7 sec. rhe 100 m freestyle record held by P. Rowe was reduced by o.ssec to Imin 17.1 sec.
With two nights of swimming still remaining, Forbes has a chance to break more records and also win the most titles at the championships.
A third record was broken last evening by the diminutive Wharenui 12-year-old, Trudi Garland. She added Miss S. J. Hunter’s 12-year-old girls 200 m backstroke record to a host she already has. But this must have been one of the most pleasing for Miss Garland to beat. Her time was 2min 42.9 sec, which was o.6sec better than the old mark. Miss Garland also had the satisfaction of seeing she had a faster time in winning ‘the under 13 title, than the winning time in the senior event. Apart from these records there was little of note last evening. Paul Rowe (Wharenui) swam a good time to win the under 13 boys 100 m freestyle, and considering that he has been ill, M. Trembath (Wharenui) did well to
record Imin B.3sec to win the men’s 100 m backstroke. R. Carlson (Wharenui) was pushed to a reasonable time in the 100 m junior boys backstroke by C. Graham (New Brighton), but J. Laugeson (Sockbum Park) was disappointing in the 200 m men’s breaststroke. He did however, have to compete against the clock because the opposition was left far behind. Miss L. Rowe (Wharenui) was another who suffered from lack of competition, and her times were well outside her best. In the women’s 200 m breaststroke. Miss Z. Wilson, swam a well-paced race to record near her best time.
