TURAKINA BEARS FAMOUS NAME

The refrigerated cargo ; liner Turakina (7707 tons), comi manded by Captain J. F. ' Milner, of Britain, has a fam- : ous name. She is discharging | 2241 tons of British general i cargo. I The Turakina was originally designed for the Crusader Line (charter: service which she entered, shortly after launching from Bartram and Sons, Ltd. Sunderland, in February 1960. The same year she made her maiden voyage to Lyttelton, using the berth she now occupies. A familiar visitor, she served both tile New Zealand-Japan run, and the North American Pacific Coast trade. Built for the defunct New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd, she relinquished her Crusader charter when P and O .swept ail its subsidiaries into ; one net. I Since then, the Turakina has (ranged as far afield as Rio de Janeiro and West Africa. A feature of the fourth Turakina is her expanse of wooden decks, a luxury today. Turakina means in Maori “fallen tree.” In 1895. the first Turakina. a sailing ship, performed an astonishing feat in overtaking the company's steamer Ruapehu, a victory of sail over steam. The next Turakina was a cargo-passenger vessel. The third ship of the name achieved fame. In the Tasman Sea. on August 20, 1940. this Turakina, a cargo steamer, was sunk by the German raider Orion. Her master, Captain, J. B. Laird, of Glasgow, fought her to the death, and was killed himself. Those who have served under the late Captain Laird, including men at Lyttelton, recall him with respect. >3 £: rt ARRIVALS I Turakina (5.56 a.m.i. 7707, Capt. J. F. Milner.
