Age-group swimming

The Commonwealth Games swimming, which finished less than a week ago in the same pool, appeared to be a stimulus to young competitors in the I Canterbury national age-group preliminaries at the Queen I Elizabeth II Park pool last evening. Two records were bettered last night, but there was more enthusiasm in the swimming than in the few carnivals in Christchurch before the Games. Both records were set by the diminutive Wharenui swimmer. Denise Head, in the 11 years and under section. She took B.ssec. off the 10-year-old girls 200 metres freestyle time record of 2min. 45.55ec. held by Trudi Garland. The other new mark was in the 100 metres butterfly, where again, it was one of Miss Garland’s records which suffered. Miss Head did I min. 28.35ec., which was .2sec. inside the old time. The seven fastest swimmers in the preliminaries in each event will have their names and times forwarded to the Xew Zealand Amateur Swimming Association Tinies from other centres around New Zealand will also be submitted. and the seven fastest in the country will compete in the national age-group championship finals at Blenheim on March 2 and 3.
