Swimming records go

Four Canterbury records were broken and one equalled I at the second session of the I Canterbury national age-group preliminaries at Queen Elizabeth II Park pool last evening. The records were broken as] Canterbury’s younger swimmers continued their good form ini search of places in the finals of ■ the Hansell’s -New Zealand age-! group championships at Blenheim: on March 2 and 3. Eddie Box (Wharenui), who finished second in 2min 32.45ec, also bettered the record. Denise Head (Wharenui; broke her third record of the preliminaries in the 11 years and under 200 m backstroke. Her time of 2min 59.35ec was 6sec better j than Trudi Garland’s record for! 10-year-olds. Miss Garland broke a record herself, and it belonged to the New Zealand dual bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games, Miss S. J. Hunter. Miss Garland’s 2min 47.65ec for the 200 m individual medley took 1.7 sec off the old time. Grant Gillard (New Brighton) equaUed the 10-year-old boys’ 200 m backstroke record, held by Box, with a time of 2min 58.1 sec. THREE WINS Miss L.
