Canal project: Japan’s denial
I (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright i TOKYO, February 7. I The Japanese Government had had nothing to do with the multi-national project to open a canal across the Isthmus of Kra, near the Thai-Burmese border, the Japanese Foreign Minister; (Mr Masayoshi Ohira) told the Diet (Parliament) yesterday. He was replying to a Socialist questioner at a meeting of rhe Lower House Budget Committee who had alleged that the Government (was supporting a proposal to (use hydrogen bombs in a short-cut plan to clear earth | for the project. ! The Prime Minister (Mr Tanaka) flatly denied that his summit meetings with Thai leaders during his visit to Bangkok last month had touched on the matter.
