WANKEL PROGRESS

Manufacturing methods developed by a British firm may lead to cheaper and more powerful Wankel-type rotary-piston engines, it is reported from Britain. The difficulty and expense of machining and coating

the epitrochoidal “cylinder bore” of Wankel-type engines is said to be responsible for much of the cost of the engines. The Vandervell company has developed a separate four-piece replaceable cylinder liner for such engines which can be used instead of machining the inside of the engine casing. The liner is said to be simple and relatively cheap to make, and easy to assemble into the engine. 'The company says that use of the liners could make servicing Wankel engines even easier, and allow the use of wet liners to improve heat dissipation.
