Gas turbine contracts

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. Contracts to supply 420 megawatts of gas turbine generating plant to the New Zealand Electricity Department had been approved by the Government, the Minister of Electricity (Mr McGuigan) said today. The manufacturers will be Turbo Power and Marine Systems and Curtis Wright Corporation, both of the United States. Mr McGuigan said that, subject to satisfactory environmental reports, 220mw of plant would be installed at Stratford and 200mw at Whirinaki, near Napier. Bunnythorpe, named late last year as a possible third site, would not now be used, the Minister said. The Electricity Department has sub-stations at all three sites. “The revised arrangement will enable as much use as possible to be made of natural gas and reduce our dependence on imported fuel,” Mr McGuigan said. He confirmed that the target date for commissioning the stations was April, 1976 —- “sooner if possible.”
