Heath orders poll

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 7. The Prime Minister (Mr Heath) today announced that a General Election would be held in Britain on February 28. The announcement of the election came in a statement from No. 10 Downing St, the Prime Minister’s official residence.

Parliament will be dissolved tomorrow. The Queen was told of the decision while in New 7 Zealand. The three-week campaign—the shortest possible—promises to be one of the bitterest in British political history. A leading bookmaking firm today made the governing Conservatives favourites at 7 to 4 on; quoted Labour at 5 to 4 against; and the Liberal Party, 100 to 1.

The election will take place on the day on which the Queen will be opening the Australian Parliament in Canberra. The Queen will then return home immediately, and will arrive in London on the morning of March 1. The events leading to Mr Heath’s election declaration are reported on Page 11.
