WORK ON PLOUGH Hyperbole’s fast time

Hyperbole surprised his rider, G. Phillips, with a deceptive turn of speed on (he plough at Riccarton yesterday — something that might augur well for the Otaki chestnut’s chance in the Canterbury Jockey Club's Halswell Handicap tomorrow. Phillips was instructed to keep Hyperbole to threequarter pace in company with The Head, but the four-year-old brother of the good stayer, Artifice, went about his work with such keenness that he ran 1400 metres in 1:30 3-5. finishing three lengths clear of his companion.

Hyperbole sprinted the last 600 m. in 38.2-5. Brief Case showed he will bring fresh interest to bear on the two-year-olds by sprinting 600 metres with Star Gate in 36. Brief Case is a newcomer at the meeting, and might supply Jealous Lover and company with lively 7 opposition in the Middle Park Plate. Baltic Blue (G. Mein) led his stablemate, Sudden Change (A. Eastwood), by half a length ending 600 m. in 37.1-5. Mellacious (M. Skelton) and Altogether (P. Thistoll) finished 1400 m. on terms in 1:31.1-5. the last 600 m. in 37.3-5. Mellacious looked promising in his race debut, finishing sixth, on the first day of the meeting. Europium, a stablemate of Mellacious, and a newcomer at the meeting, sprinted 600 m. keenly in 36.4-5. On her fifth in the Wellington Oaks and fourth in the Camp Handicap at Trentham. Europium is one of the brighter chances in the T h r e e-Year-Old Quality Handicap tomorrow. Mace (L. Didham) sprinted in from the 600 m. in 37.4-5. Mid Ocean (S. Ching) and Silver Head (G. Mein) followed in 36.4-5, finishing on terms.
