PLAYOFF AT BOWLS

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. New Zealand representatives and former titleholders were among those eliminated in a suddendeath play-off at the national women’s bowling fours championships in Wellington yesterday. Among those eliminated were the title-holder, Barbara Kunicich, Elsie Wilkie, winner of the singles in the world tournament in Wellington in December, Joyce Osborne, emergency for the New Zealand world team, and “Nicki” Nicol, a former singles champion. One of the favoured fours for the title this year, to be decided on Saturday at the Berhampore green, is skipped by Mabel Coveny, of Lower Hutt. A strong challenger is a four skipped by Lorraine Fowler, of Heme Bay, which has Verna Devlin, a member

of the New Zealand world team at No. 3. Mrs Fowler’s four will meet a four skipped by Pat Dymond, of Stratford. Mrs Dymond was also a nominee for the world team. Rhoda Ryan’s Waikato four will meet May Taylor’s Wellington four in what could prove a crucial match today. Yet another contender is a four headed by Mahia Potiki, a consistent performer at this level. Mrs Potiki’s four will meet the highly-rated four skipped by Jane Porter, of Miramar.
