SPASSKY WINS 13 against one

GV.Z. Press Assn— Copyright) NEW YORK. B. Spassky played 13 other chess players simultaneously at the United Nations, and beat all of them but one—a fellow Russian. The international grand master and Soviet champion forced 12 to resign, but O. Bugaev, a Ukranian in the United Nations internal audit service, fought him to a draw after an hour and a half in an exhibition sponsored by the United Nations Chess Club and the Russian Book Club. Bugaev, a beefy, blackhaired man from Kiev who has been playing chess seven years, had a Karo-Khan opening, moving the Queen’s bishop pawn one square forward.

“I defended very hard,” he said. “I tried to beat him but, you know, it’s useless.” Spassky moved down the line of seated players, from table to table, making each move in anywhere from 2 seconds to 2 minutes.

The 150 spectators applauded as one opponent after another gave up and when Spassky shook hands with Bugaev to acknowledge the draw.

Transfer.—P. Boyer, a striker, was signed by the English Football League first division club, Norwich, for £145,000 from the third division club. Bournemouth, whose former manager, John Bond, took over the managership of Norwich in December.
