Workers to stop 9 sheep shipments
uN'.Z. Press .Association’ WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. New Zealand freezing workers would take “effective measures” to stop any more New Zealand sheep being sent live to Iran, said the secretary of the Meat Workers’ Union (Mr F. E. McNulty) this evening. Mr McNulty declined to say what the measures would be, but he did not rule out the possibility of industrial stoppages. He said the union had protested to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Moyle) about shipments of live sheep and, in the light of the Minister’s reply, could see no reason for the shipments to continue. Mr McNulty and other
industrial union leaders today discussed what action could be taken to stop the shipments. “We will take effective measures when the next shipment takes place,” Mr McNulty said. Meat exporters and the Government have given the need to slaughter sheep according to strict religious rites for the Iranian market as the reason for shipping them live. Mr McNulty said ritual slaughter could be done in New Zealand freezing works. A million sheep had been shipped live to Iran from Australia last year, but Australian unions had promised that this would stop.
