GRENADA GOVT

No delay by U.K. (X.Z.P.A.-Rcuter—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 6. The British Government has turned down suggestions in Parliament that it should postpone the independence of the troubled Caribbean State of Grenada set for Thursday. Lord Balniel, a Foreign Office Minister of State, told questioners that there had been no reports of violence over the last eight days or so and full sovereignty would pass from Britain to the constitutional Government of Grenada on February 7. The British Minister said that the prime issue of the recent election in Grenada was that of independence. He had been informed that the election procedures were generally well observed and in these circumstances it seemed right to grant the request for independence. Britain’s present responsibility to the associated State of Grenada is solely confined to foreign affairs and external defence. Britain has no responsibility for its internal affairs.
