Miners stronger on Australian markets

Australian sharemarkets rounded of! a day of active trading on a generally firmer note, led by a bright performance by metal stocks and leading oil issues. Industrials, however. remained mixed and unsettled.

i Gold stocks were in the ascendancy from the opening [bell: Peko Wallsend rose 40c • to 620 c. Bougainville was the exception among metal stocks, and dropped Bc. Investors are tafraid of the political reper[cussions of its record profit, • as calls for a redistribution !of its earnings are intensifying. • B.H.P. put up a mixed performance. tinning marginally [in Sydney but dropping 6c on • the home market.
