PIGEON RACE
1100 birds entered (.\’.Z, Press Association) AUCKLAND. Eleven hundred nine-month-old birds will fly in New Zealand’s richest pigeon race — from Paekakariki to Auckland; beginning on May 18. One of the organisers ol the race, Mr W. M. Clarkson, said the last of the ’entries for the $ll,OOO race 1 arrived yesterday. Each entry for five birds cost $5O. Entries were re--1 ceived from Australia and ■ New Zealand. Two fancies from England have paid entrance fees for local pigeons to race for them. i The first prize will be 1 $4OOO, with second and third ( prizes of $2OOO and $lOOO i There will also be many ' minor prizes. Most entrants have bred t the birds specifically for the i race. Many syndicates have 1 asked fanciers to breed and ! prepare birds for them, i May 18 is the middle ol the shooting season, and Mt ' Clarkson said he would rely ;on the sportsmanship ol I hunters not to shoot the 1 piegons, which are protec- ’ ted.
