Belated thanks
A former American sailor telephoned the police from Hollywood last evening to thank New Zealanders for the warm reception they gave his ship — 49 years ago. Mr Fred Walls, aged 67, of Lexington Avenue, Hollywood, served as a pharmacist’s assistant on the U.S.S. Omaha, which berthed at Lyttelton in 1925. He telephoned the police at 9.55 p.m. yesterday (3 a.m. Hollywood time) to say what a warm reception the ship had been given and to send his best wishes to South Islanders. “He was quite serious, although I think he might have been celebrating his birthday or something,” Constable G. K. Tibbotts said.
The call was the second I from overseas the police received last evening: only I. five minutes before, a person from the Isle of Man telephoned wanting to > speak to a Games official.
