J The new treaty, unlike the [■[old, is likely to be of limited duration, and is expected to > provide for return of the ■ canal, and the canal zone, to (Panama, while giving the . United States the right to ) use. and maintain and defend, I it during the treaty period. Panama will receive an equit- ' able share of profits from the I canal, and take part in its i management and defence. ’ The duration of the treaty, • which will provide for in- : creased international traffic • through the canal, is a subject of negotiation. .
