No jobs for some teachers

(By our education reporter) More than 80 South Island secondary teachers are unemployed even though schools have resumed.

On January 10 the Depart-; ment of Education had more than 100 teachers on its books who were unemployed. A large proportion of this number were young teachers just out of teachers’ college, and most were in the Christchurch district. With the opening of [schools some of the teachers have been able to find positions. but the situation is a highly competitive one. The Department of Education has records only of those unemployed teachers who are still bonded. The major reason given by teachers for wanting to remain in Christchurch is that

I they are immobile because of family or marital reasons. The Department of Education, however, has concluded that only a small number of those listed as unemployed are genuinely immobile. There was a reluctance on (the part of many to go where the jobs were, the senior inspector of secondary' schools for the southern region (Mr R. U. Roy) said yesterday. Mr Roy said that some of the unemployed teachers might get jobs once schools had established what their new rolls would be. This was expected to be known by the end of this week.
