MAGISTRATE’S COURT Year in prison for indecency offences

I “Young girls and women are not to be subjected to this kind of thing,” Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., said in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when he sentenced a man to 12 months imprisonment on two charges of obscene exposure, one charge of doing an indecent act, and one charge of using obscene language. He is Denys Raymond Pockson. aged 28, a truck driver (Mr M. J. Glue). He had previously been conivicted on the charges. Mr Glue said the defendant had a personality disorder, and had a record of 'similar offences. He was a very worried and disturbed person. Christine Laraine Young, aged 27, a driver (Mr E. T. Higgins), had previously pleaded guilty to aiding in the management of a brothel in Basingstoke Street on November 19. Counsel said Young had made a full and frank confession to the police. She had not offended before, and accepted that the offence was socially unacceptable. The Magistrate said that aiding in the management of a brothel was a serious offence, and a substantial penalty was (provided hi the Crimes Act. However, Young's good previous record enabled a lighter penalty, he said. DANGEROUS DRIVING Anthony John Altield, aged 19, unemployed (Mr J. R. Milligan), , was convicted and released on probation for 18 months and lined $lOO when he was sentenced on a charge of dangerous driv.mg causing injury. Hampton), was placed on probation for two wears, ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment. and ordered to pay $49 compensation when she appeared for sentence on three charges of false pretence and one of burglary. Sergeant C. Walsh said earlier that the defendant had eashed three cheques in October of a total value of $45. They were from a cheque-book she had: found in her father’s desk. In| December, she burgled her parents’ property in Neil Street,; and stole an electric razor and an alarm clock, which she sold, i Mr Hampton said the defen-' dant had been in a considerable amount of trouble in the last' year and had been before the' Court on a number of occasions. Her parents had shown increased interest in her since , the offences, and she was living at home with them. The Magistrate said that. it. was upsetting that the offences were committed when she was on probation. but he would give her one more chance. INDECENT ASSAULT A 61-year-old man (Mr M. J. Glue) was fined $5O when he appeared for sentence on a charge of indecently assaulting 'an 11-jear-old girl at Shirley on : December 23. Mr Glue said medical reports indicated the defendant was lonely, and he had problems with alcohol. He was affected byalcohol at the time of the . offence. The Magistrate said the offence was totally out of character and another offence was most unlikely. The defendant’s name -was suppressed. (Before Mr W. F Brown, S.M.ASSAULT CHARGE Neil Grant, aged 19, a truck driver, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault, and was fined S6O. Sergeant M. Stevens said the defendant attended a party on February 4. After he had been there for about 20 minutes the complainant, a woman, asked him to leave. The defendant then hit her in the face three times with his fist. The complainant suffered a cut to tlie right eye and a bruise on the forehead. When the police arrived, the , defendant was very aggressive, : and told them the complainant was cheeky, and had got what she deserved. The defendant said he hit the • complainant only once. BURGLARY Howard John Harrison, aged : 19. a workman (Mr T. M. Abbott). Iwho pleaded guilty to three charges of burglary. was convicted and remanded,in Sunnyside Hospital until February 14 for :sentence. Senior-Sergeant F. G. Mulcare said the defendant and two other persons, climbed through louvre windows of Dalgetv (New (Zealand), Ltd. on November 23. Damage was done to the interior of the building. The defendant then went to Fleming and Co.. Ltd, in Shands Road, and entered the building ' through a side door. Vandalism took place. He then went to Watties Canneries, Ltd. in Shands Road, and acted as a look-out yvhile friends entered the building through louvre windows. He later entered .the- building. Sugar was thrown aroqnd, a fire-extinguisher, emptied. 17 windows broken, and a sum of . money- stolen. ASSAULT CHARGE Tai Tuhito Wiki, aged 33. a carpenter, was fined $3O when he appeared on a charge of assaulting Bruce Allerton Roscoe on December 7. He pleaded j guilty.
