Jan’s Beau favoured at Avondale today

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. In anything like their best form, Jan’s Beau and Battle Heights would have the New Zealand Day Handicap at Avondale today to themselves. They have the maximum weight allowed under the conditions of the race, but no more

than 58kg—an amount both have mastered Quite comfortably in the best company. Jan’s Beau failed last time out, in the Auckland Cup, predictably enough after he went through the first 1600 m at an impossibly fast pace. This followed a string of fine performances at weight-for-age and two in handicaps, one of which was the Avondale Cup. In the Avondale Cup, over the 2200 m of today’s event, Jan’s Beau carried 57kg and ran his opponents ragged. He won the Queen Elizabeth II Plate at Paeroa and the Clifford Plate at Ellerslie the same way, one over 2200 m, the other over 2000 m. At his best, Jan’s Beau is too fast altogether for tile present lot of middle distance runners. Certainly none in the New Zealand Day Handicap, even Battle Heights, would get within cooee of him at 2200 m. BATTLE HEIGHTS With his Wellington Cup win two starts back and successes in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes meanwhile, Battle Heights will have backing. Bronze Legend should be worth a bet for third place. Success for any of the others would represent remarkable improvement. Every bit as interesting as the return to racing of Jan’s Beau, and his meeting with Battle Heights, will be the clash of several ton sprinters in the Waitangi Stakes, a weight-for-age 1400 m. The three-year-old filly, Pheroz Jewel, is a notable acceptor, while Hi-Bing, Curly Wave, Tashi, La Souveraine, and St Crispin are others with the ability to win.
