Tanker quits McMurdo
J The giant oil tanker, [Maumee, which became disabled in McMurdo Sound last .(week with a jammed rudder is now on its way to Wellington under its own steam for interim repairs. The Maumee is moving at. 8J knots using jury rig steering. On Sunday afternoon the 35,000-ton, 620 ft tanker was towed to the edge of the fast ice by the United States Coast Guard ice-breaker Staten Island. There the tow was released and the Maumee resumed its northbound voyage under its own power. The Staten Island is continuing to escort the Maumee until it meets the I other ice-breaker. the! (Glacier, which will then accompany the tanker to Wellington.
