Good rise for Rothmans

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright? SYDNEY, February 4. The unaudited group net profit of Rothmans of Pall Mall (Australia) Ltd, rose by 24 per cent to $2.2m for the six months to December 31. Provision for taxation rose by $405,000 to s2.lm but depreciation fell by $26,000 to $835,000. The chairman (Sir Ronald Irish) said the total value of ex factory sales for the group rose by 21.9 per cent but noted that the value of sales can be affected by a variety of factors. He expressed concern over the rise in costs in various forms and said that although the efficiency of the group’s operations is of a very high standard, prices will eventually have to be reviewed unless costs become more stable. “While it is difficult to make reliable predictions under current circumstances, the board is confident that the results for the full year to June will show a good improvement on last year,”, he added. The company will pay an unchanged eight per cent interim dividend.
