Plates mark N.Z. Day
A limited issue of 300 silver and gold commemorative plates is being struck for the Library »f Imperial History to mark the designation of Waitangi Day as New Zealand Day. Mr D. Crawford, of Lonllon, the chairman of the library, said on his arrival In New Zealand recently that the first of the commemorative plates will be given to the New Zealand Goveminent. Of the 300 9in plates,
H 250 will be in sterling silver, .sand 50 in 18 carat gold. ,i Sir William Dargie, one of ■'this century’s foremost portrait artists, was commisi sinned to design the plate, ■ which bears three heads —a , three-quarter face of Queen Victoria taken from a portrait painted in the year the Treaty of Waitangi was > signed, a profile of Hone ; Heke, a strong advocate of 1 the signing, and a profile of H Queen Elizabeth. ■' The role of the library is )'lto commemorate significant - events connected with the , | Royal Family.
