Whisky duty decided
i f.X'.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. The Queen today gave her assent to the fixing of the rate of excise duty for whisky distilled in New Zealand. Presiding over the Executive Council, she approved a rate of $13.25 a proof gallon. This compares with $lB a proof gallon for imported spirits, and $13.50 for locally-distilled gin. The Minister of Customs (.Mr Connelly) said in a statement that the difference took into account the additional costs involved by the statutory obligation to mature whisky for a minimum period of three years.
