Games song
Sir,—l whole-heartedly ’ agree with the sentii.-ents expressed by “Senex” con-1 cerning the Games song, “Join Together.” As it is a i Kiwi song, composed by a Kiwi and sung by Kiwis for l a Kiwi event, surely it is a poor show to have the;' much-used recording sung ini a phoney American accent. P So many of our promising; young pop singers like Rayl Columbus and Craig Scott express themselves in pleas- ■ ant Kiwi language; yet when; they sing they usually prefer to sound like Yanks. Plenty ( of good pop music is avail- 1 able, much of it composed , by New Zealanders. Why spoil it by slavish imitation ■ of the poorest American performers? Here’s one music- . lover still hoping that our composers and singers of various kinds of music will develop our own effective . and individual Kiwi ' i style.—Yours etc., OLYMPUS. February 1, 1974.
