Unionists banned

The South African Government has banned three young white trade unionists who have been closely involved in attempts to organise African workers into trade unions. The security police have served five-year restriction orders on Mr Halton Cheadle, national organiser for the South African Textile Workers’ Industry Union; Mr David Hemson, the union’s research officer; and Mr David Davis, administrative officer of . the General Factory Workers’ Benefit Fund. Both organisations cater for African workers. The three men were connected with a strike for higher wages by 10.000 black textile workers in Durban last week. Under the terms of their banning orders, served under the Suppression of Communism Act, they will be unable to continue with their trade union aetvities, they are not allowed to attend any public or political gathering, nor can they enter any factory, harbour, African township, or tribal trust land.
