Day care centres
Sir, —Day care centres are a feature of all Communist countries where, because of the fantastically high cost of food and clothing, the mother must join the work force. A grandmother usually assumes her responsibilities with the care of the children. Illegitimate children must be cared for, but State day care centres in New Zealand could increase their numbers, by fostering the idea that having a baby without husband or home is the “in” thing. As well, they would encourage mothers of young families to work for luxuries. It amazes me that Mr Kirk, staunch Anglican and supporter of the family unit, should at the same time defend communes. Children need two parents and stability, not de facto relationships. “Love free as air, at sight of human ties Spreads his light wings, and in a moment flies . . .”— Yours, etc., GRANDMOTHER.
