N.Z. was one short of best
New Zealand narrowly failed to equal the record number of gold medals it won at Auckland (1950) and Perth (1962). when the 1974 Commonwealth Games ended on Saturday. Ten golds were won at each of the Auckland and Perth Games; nine were were taken in Christchurch. Over-all, New Zealand finished fourth of the 38 competing nations, with nine golds, eight silvers and 18 bronzes, behind Australia, England and Canada. The line-up of New Zealand’s medal winners includes all team members when those teams won medals — the fours in the bowls, and the pursuiters and tandem riders in the cycling. Four New Zealanders each won two medals — Mark Treffers (gold and silver), Jaynie Parkhouse (gold and bronze), and Susan Hunter (two bronzes), in swimming, and John Walker (silver and bronze) on the athletics track.
