Jipcho to stay amateur?
The great Kenyan distance track runner, Ben Jipcho, is now unlikely to turn professional. “If the Kenyan Athletic Federation gives us more freedom and accepts invitations for me, and others, I think I might give up considering turning professional.” he said, after finishing third in the 1500 metres final on Saturday. Jipcho, who won the gold medals in the 3000 metres steeplechase and the 5000 metres, earlier indicated that Kenyan athletes were not permitted to travel freely overseas. They had few opportunities to race against world-class competition. An offer, believed to be in the vicinity of $40,000, was made to Jipcho to run professionally in the United States.
