Elder and May lead
The runners-up in last season's] national Sanders Cup yachting, series, D. Elder ad R. May. took] an early lead in the Canterbury! Javelin class trials at Lyttelton on Saturday. Elder and May comfortablv won the second heat, from K. May and J. Boraston. with K. Humphries and P. Bradley third. The morning race was abandoned because the calm weather prevented any of the crews from completing the course within the time limit of three hours. Elder and May, and G. Coleman and W. Stringer, who were sail-' ing J.W.H. because their own craft has not yet been shipped back from Australia, were at the head of the fleet when the event was called off. In the afternoon. P. G. Beaumont and D. Eastmond were first round the mark at the end of the opening leg, but put paid to their chances by capsizing and having to withdraw. Elder ond Maj- eagerly accepted the chance of taking the lead and were not caught. Four more races will be held | next week-end, the whole series of six serving as trials for the [ Sanders Cup and national charm [ pionahlps, and the last four heats also counting toward* the Canterbury title. “
