Heater in vehicle sump
Electric heaters in the sump and engine-block: are among features of a Land-Rover which has been prepared in Christchurch for use at New Zealand’s Antarctic station, Scott Base. The petrol-engine vehicle will mainly carry people be-! tween Scott Base and the air-i field. It will replace a Land-i Rover which has been in use ; .it the base for more than sixyears. The new four-cylinder vehicle. which has an 88in wheelbase but is mounted on large wheels from the .text biggest model, is!
expected to be shipped south m the next week or so. To help cope with Antarctic conditions the vehicle has been fitted by the Christchurch agent, Amuri Motors, Ltd, with about $l3OO worth of extras. They include the 110-volt American-made engine heaters—to be used when the vehicle is not running—a large moveable spotlight, a pre-heating device on the carburettor, two cabin heaters, and a special alternator to handle the extra demands on the electrical system. Special dust-proofing has
also been fitted because scoria dust is a problem during the summer. In winter, the vehicle will be fitted with snow tyres.
