Young farmers will work in U.S.A.

Four Young Farmers’ Club members will leave tor the United States in April on a six-months “work experience abroad” programme organised by Future Farmers of America.

They are Messrs M. J. Bennett (Ashburton), N. J. Burgess (Cheviot), V. C. McIntyre (Inglewood) and T. J. Begg (Balclutha). Mr H. C. A. Wards, who is

executive officer for the New !Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, said that! Future Farmers of America 1 iwas a similar organisation to the young farmers’ clubs, but was largely restricted to secondary school agricultural students. Those taking part in the! programme were placed on farms, paid wages related to their age and experience, and lived as members of the farm [family. They paid their own fares. All of the New Zealand group wished to broaden their knowledge and experience farming life in another country. Murray Bennett, aged 19 years, has worked for three i years on his father’s mixed [farm gaining livestock and I cropping experience. He is ! secretary of the Wakanui ! Young Farmers’ Club, and i.would like to study the [organisation of voung farmers’ clubs in the United '[States. i Neil Burgess, aged .18 I years, from Cheviot, also works on his family’s mixed farm. He is interested in farm machinery- and would like to be machinery contractor and farmer. Mr Wards said their destinations in the United States had not been decided yet.
