Wellington passengers stranded
More than 400 persons were stranded in Christchurch last evening when six flights to Wellington were cancelled because of the closing of Wellington Airport at 6 p.m. They included the New Zealand badminton team members, on their way home after the Games, and several members of Parliament, returning for the State opening today. "There are people everywhere at the airport tonight,” a spokesman for N.A.C., Mr P. Sullivan, said last evening. “We have been able to find most of them accommodation in Christchurch, although the situation is fairly tight,” Mr Sullivan said. Two flights had been arranged to Palmerston North, and the passengers could then catch the bus to Wellington, but only Friendships and Viscounts could be used, and a number of these were stranded at Wellington, he said. N.A.C. had also cancelled one flight to Auckland from Christchurch, as the plane was in Wellington, said Mr Sullivan.
