Amnesty extended
(N.Z. Press Assn. — copyright) NICOSIA, February 3. I The Cyprus Government has extended indefinitely the deadline for the surrender by Eoka underground guerrillas. The amnesty offer was [part of a general one pro- | claimed by President Ma[karios last Monday, after the [death of the guerrillas’ [underground leader, General [George Grivas. The as-yet-unidentified [new commander of Eoka reacted promptly to the archbishop’s offer by ordering a complete cessation of all Eoka operations. The five-day surrender period, however, expired at
noon yesterday without any [of the 73 wanted Eoka guerrillas having taken advanItage of the offer to report to [the authorities, give up their weapons, and go free. A leaflet issued by the new Eoka commander declared that the wanted men would only “return to their villages, towns, families, and places of work with their honour vindicated." The leaflet added: “As tar as we are concerned, we shall keep the truce, to give time for correct resolutions, but the struggle for Enosis (union with Greece) will continue.” Some observers interpret the new Eoka leaflet as an indication that the underground movement will give up its terrorist campaign against President Makarios and continue its struggle in the political arena.
