INLAND SEA
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 3. The area now under flood in Australia is equivalent to more than one-half of Europe, If the map of Australia was transposed on a map of Europe, the flooded areas would stretch from the Irish Sea across the Netherlands to Poland, down to central Turkey, across to central Italy, and continue across northeastern France to the English Channel. The area under water is greater than that covered by England and Wales. In the state of Queensland alone, it is estimated that 160,000 square miles are under water, and that one million cattle have been lost. Television viewers throughout Australia last night pledged help for the flood victims in the eastern states during a national 36-hour “telethon” which, by dawn, had raised more than $650,000. The organisers hope to have raised at least slm when the appeal ends later tonight.
