POWER OF THE KENYANS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. Kenyan athletes at Christchurch are proving themselves the greatest in the Commonwealth and probably in the world, the London “Evening Standard” said yesterday.
The newspaper’s Games reporter, Michael Herd, said that Kipchoge Keino and
Ben Jipcho are the greatest runners to come from Africa, ’ and it was no coincidence . that both are Kenyans. , It was apparent they are ! the first of what will be a , long line of great athletes. Herd said that one reason ( for their success is physical: . they have a massive capaj city, a long-legs-to-trunk re- , lationship, and, because of ' the thinner air at the . height at which they live, an I incredible recovery rate. I The correspondent also ! suggested another reason: > the best fighters are hungry i fighters. Jipcho, for instance, ; started to run because the > prizes were blankets, and r the family needed warmth, Herd said.
